K9 Unit HELMOND PD THE NETHERLANDS
For patrol dogs we use most of the time belgian Malinois, german or dutch shepperds. The dogs are bought from civilians who have trained their dog by K.N.P.V standards PH 1 and/or PH 2. The dog are by that time 3 or 4 years old. After the dogs and the handlers got used to each other, we start our own training programm to get ready for the national police patroldog certificate. We have to pass a test every 2 years. If a handler fails to pass this test. He is not allowed to use the dog for work. The trainingprogramm contains searching for little and big objects, searching for people in a building and bit and hold suspects. A experienced handler gets his dog ready for the test in about 6 weeks. IN THE LINE OF DUTY: The dogs are used to give backup to other policeofficers during patrolshifts and on footpatrol in the clubarea during the weekend in the citycenter of Helmond. Next to that we use them for crowdcontrol with big events and soccergames. Most of these times, we work together with the riotsquad and horses. From sunday till thursday between 15.00 hrs and 07.00 hrs there is always one doghandler on patrol. On friday and saterday between 19.00 hrs and 04.00 hrs we have two doghandlers on patrol. They do the normal patrolwork (respond on calls) and respond to calls for backup to other units. |
