K9 TRAINING PROGRAMME: When the dogs got used to their new handlers we start training for the National police patroldog certificate. The test for this certificate (wich every handler and dog have to take) has 3 parts: 1)
Obedience and Skills: To show that the dog obeys his handler. The handler has to walk and run a distance of about 300 meters while the dog stays next to him. This has to be the same when the handler drives a bicycle. During walking with the dog the handler has command his dog to the right and left. After this the handler has to leave his dog at a place and someone will try to feed the dog. The dog is not allowed to take the food. The next exercise is that the handler is walking with his dog and a "suspect" is hiding somewhere outside. This "suspect" make breaking noises. They are that loud so the dog will hear them. The dog must stay quiet untill the "suspect" is in sight and "arrested. You have to lay down the dog and search the suspect. The dog is not allowed to bite, just bark. The last exercise is the obstacle course. The dog has to jump over a fence (1 meter high), jump over a wall (2 meters high), jump over a pit (2 meters wide), walk two open stairs up and down and walk over an 2 meter high platform and go througt an pipe (6 meters long) in wich he can't see the other site.
2) Trackin The dog has to find 3 small (like a key) objects on a terrain (grass, stone or sand). This terrain is 50 by 50 meters and he has to do this in 3 minutes. After finding the objects he has to bring them to the handler. Second the dog has to find 2 large object (weapon and crowbar) in a big terrain ( for example forrest). After finding an object he has to bark to let the handler know he found it. The handler has to call his dog back and then send him to find the second object. Third the dog has to search a building with at least 6 rooms. In one of the rooms there will be hiding a person behind a clossed door. The dog has to search all the rooms completly free. After finding this person he has to bark or attend his handler an otherway that he found this person. 3. Quard or bite and hold a "suspect":
Second the handler and dog has to patrol for about 10 meters. A person with a stick in his hand. Then he runs away from the handler, leaving a brief-case behind. The handler calls twice that the man has to stop or the dog will be send. This person doesn't stop and the dog is send after this person. The dog makes an attack and bites this person to hold him. While the dog attacks the person hits the dog with the stick. The handlers takes while he is going to his dog the brief-case with him and calls his to let loose. After that he searches the person and brings him to a patrolcar guarded by the dog. When the handler goes to the patrolcar to open it, the person tries to escape. He is stopped again by the dog. Third the handler will
send his dog after a suspect which is running away from him. He calls twice to
the suspect that he has to stop. When the suspect doesn't stop, the handler
releases his dog. But when the dog is about 60 meters away from the handler. The
handler calls the dog back and the has to return instantly to his handler.
Fourth the handler walks with his dog. When suddenly a suspect shoots. The handler has to take cover and the dog is released. When the dog catches the suspect. The handler orders him to drop the gun. Then the handler goes to his dog and bags the the gun for evidence. The suspect is searched and brought to a patrolcar while the guards him. At the patrolcar the suspect tries to attacht the handler.
